Black1947 Cadillac Series 75 Custom by Derham – A True Piece of Automotive History
This 1947 Cadillac Series 75 was custom-built by Derham for William S. Paley, the renowned CBS executive and television pioneer. Originally delivered to Paley’s family, it was later owned by his sister Blanche P. Levy and her husband, who kept it in the family until 1978. The car was traded in for two Rolls-Royces before being passed to Gilbert Dobbins in 1978, and subsequently to Charlie Smith in 1993, who began its restoration. The current owners, well-known experts in classic Cadillacs, acquired it in 1996 and completed the restoration, ensuring the car runs and drives as it did when new.
Derham’s Custom Touches: Derham started with a Series 75 Imperial Sedan with a divider window and added their distinctive customizations, which include:
A formal padded top
A deluxe interior
Jump seats for added passenger comfort
Special rear seat radio equipment and vanities.
According to Cadillac historian Roy Schneider, only 33 of this model were believed to have been produced by Derham in the immediate postwar era (1946-1949).
Key Features:
Engine: Original 346 Cubic Inch V8
Transmission: 3-speed manual with modern Gear Vendors overdrive, allowing for high-speed touring with ease.
Paint & Body: The paint and bodywork are of exceptional quality, showcasing a flawless finish. The car was completely rust-free and taken down to bare metal during its restoration in the 1990s.
Chrome & Stainless: The chrome and stainless trim are in outstanding condition, with particular attention paid to the grille – a massive die-cast piece that is pit-free and stunning in its detail.
Tires: The Coker 16-inch radial whitewall tires have less than 100 miles since installation.
One of the car’s standout features is the hood ornament, which cleverly doubles as the hood latch mechanism—a unique and charming detail.
This 1947 Cadillac Series 75 Custom by Derham is a rare piece of automotive history, combining luxury, elegance, and exceptional craftsmanship. It’s an incredible example of postwar Cadillac design, with an interesting provenance and an outstanding restoration that ensures it runs and drives as beautifully as it looks.
