GrayExterior:
This 1940 LaSalle Series 52 Special is a design leader, showcasing Harley Earl’s “torpedo” look at its finest. The sealed beams are now integrated into the fenders, and the body lines are gently rounded, giving the car a clean, smooth appearance. The iconic LaSalle grille, slimmer than Cadillac’s but equally artful, arguably reached its pinnacle with this model. Like the 1939 models, this 1940 variant features vertical brightwork in the “catwalk” areas between the grille and headlamps—a signature of Earl’s design. The catwalks are now wider and fully integrated with the fenders. This four-door sedan is bathed in what is likely the factory-applied Harbor Mist Gray Metallic, which remains in excellent condition with a shiny, well-preserved finish. The car is further enhanced with additional accessory bumpers at both the front and rear, all beautifully mirror-like. From its gently sloping roofline to the teardrop rear quarters that look as though they’re moving at 100 MPH while standing still, the car’s lines are nothing short of magnificent. The darker gray steel wheels feature some dish trimming and chrome moon caps with red-centered badges, completing the striking look.
Interior:
Opening the door, you are greeted by gray herringbone-patterned cloth covering the door panels. The stitching creates a faux panel design, complemented by polished knobs and handles, along with a strip of polished oak at the upper sill. Stepping inside, you’ll find a wide split bench covered in the same gray herringbone broadcloth that covers both the front and rear seats. The bolsters match the door panels, continuing the cohesive design throughout. The simple yet effective dashboard features a gray steel topper with wood trim, housing Art Deco-styled instruments. Vertical chrome ribs accent the center speaker grille, despite this car originally being a radio delete model. The banjo-style steering wheel, in excellent condition, features a light cream Bakelite surround and a horn ring that wraps three-quarters of the wheel. A heater box hangs above the pristine gray carpet that covers the floor, and both the upper pillar surfaces and headliner are finished in tight, gray broadcloth that still looks fresh after 83 years.
Drivetrain:
Under the hood sits a 322ci V8 engine, dusty but rust-free. A single 2-barrel Carter carburetor sits atop, tucked beneath the oil bath air cleaner system. This is mated to the original Selective Synchromesh 3-speed manual transmission, which sends power to a 3.92 rear axle, ensuring a smooth and responsive driving experience.
Undercarriage:
The undercarriage is structurally sound, featuring a clean X-frame with pristine floor pans and rockers. The black frame supports the factory flooring, all rust-free and in nearly new condition. The only rust present is slight surface peppering on some untreated suspension components. The front suspension is independent with coil springs, while the rear uses leaf springs. The car is equipped with drum brakes all around, leaving the frame and undercarriage in excellent condition.
Drive-Ability:
Our test driver reported great acceleration, smooth handling, and a comfortable ride, with seamless shifting throughout. A slight bit of smoke on startup was noted, but everything else functioned as designed. The LaSalle has plenty of power, delivering an impre
