Description: This 1951 Mercury Custom is a classic “lead sled” with an extensive restoration that includes updates to the exterior, interior, and drivetrain. Having been owned for the past 4 years, it is primarily used for weekend drives and runs great.
Exterior:
The car is finished in a stunning Calypso Pearl Green with a nearly 30-year-old paint job that still shines impressively. It features traditional custom styling cues including rounded, lowered bodywork, smoothed surfaces, and custom fender skirts. The car also boasts a 2 ¼-inch chopped roof with a handmade Carson cloth top, shaved door handles, and a custom rear bumper crafted from parts of a ’55 Packard and a ’55 Studebaker. The paint is recently ceramic-coated, enhancing its durability and luster.
Interior:
The interior has been meticulously customized with bright white bucket seats featuring green piping, and overstuffed seats from a ’65 Lincoln (front) and a ’65 Thunderbird (rear). The custom interior includes Naugahyde rolls and pleats, plush green carpets, and matching door panels crafted by Jasper Customs. The dashboard has been upgraded with Dakota Digital gauges, and A/C is integrated and blows cold. A Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette head unit is installed in the headliner.
Drivetrain:
Under the hood is a powerful 429 V8 engine built by Jim Harter at ABCO machine shop. It features an Edelbrock 4-barrel intake and runs smoothly with a big radiator to keep it cool. The engine bay is meticulously finished with matching Calypso Green paint and polished stainless accents. The custom chassis, built by Street Machines Unlimited, includes a front clip from a ’77 LTD with power steering and brakes, Monroe shocks, a 4-link rear end with a Sprint Car torsion bar, and an Air Ride air-bag system for a wicked stance. The C6 automatic transmission drives a 9-inch rear end with 3.00 posi-traction gears.
Wheels and Tires:
The car is equipped with 15-inch painted steelies featuring 1950-spec hubcaps and beauty rings, shod with Coker whitewall radials (195/75/15 front and 225/75/15 rear).
Highlights:
- Featured in Rod & Custom magazine
- Numerous trophies from car shows
- Extensive body modifications including a custom grille and 1956 Buick headlights
- The trunk is finished to match the interior with carpet and hidden panels.
This 1951 Mercury Custom is the epitome of a classic lead sled and has been built with a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that makes it a standout in any collection. Don’t miss the chance to own this fantastic piece of automotive history!
